My belief is that anyone can benefit from the powerful tool of therapy, especially during these exceedingly difficult times. We need to ensure we are utilizing the proper tools to help cope with these unprecedented circumstances and transitions in life.  I am a licensed clinical therapist and have spent my career in local hospitals, where I worked with chronically ill adult, adolescent and pediatric populations, utilizing several therapeutic modalities.

I chose this path in life because of my strong belief that engaging in therapy on the journey of parenthood works and individuals and families directly benefit from compassionate support. Utilizing more than 20 years of experience working with children and adults, many living with severe chronic illness, I am able to integrate practical tools with clinical education and advanced perinatal mental health training to address a wide range of  mental health challenges. I offer a compassionate space for teens and adults to openly express their emotions, thoughts and life experiences with honesty.

As a disabled therapist and lifelong wheelchair user, I enjoy working with clients as they navigate life as a disabled or chronically ill person, partner, parent, or child and adapt to a largely inaccessible world. I want to work with clients to develop creative solutions for life’s challenges and strengthen your voice as a self-advocate. I aim to be a warm, positive, and consistent source of support for clients as they undergo life transitions, explore their relationships with family and friends, and forge a path of self-determination by exploring their personal relationship with gender and sexuality.

Witnessing the profound impact of suicide in my community deeply motivated me to explore what caused someone to experience such pain. My childhood was filled with exploring physiology and sociological phenomena that evolved into a passion for mental health and providing therapy to those in need. My mission is to serve you on your unique journey toward mental wellness. I believe in an approach tailored to your unique needs and aspirations. What works for one person might not work for another, and together, we’ll find what works best for you.

I understand therapy can feel daunting, and throughout my 10 years of practice, I have come to believe that empathy and genuine understanding are the cornerstones of therapy. My approach is rooted in creating a safe and non-judgmental space where my clients feel free to explore their emotions and thoughts. Having a multicultural background myself, I appreciate the significance of cultural diversity in shaping one’s identity and experiences. I recognize the impact of cultural beliefs, traditions, and values on mental health, and I am committed to incorporating cultural sensitivity into my therapeutic approach. I actively promote an inclusive environment where clients can freely express their cultural experiences without fear of judgment. If you’re ready to begin your journey towards well-being, I’m here to walk alongside you every step of the way.

Sharing some of your most vulnerable experiences with another individual can be overwhelming. Fertility

Therapy support for fertility typically involves a range of psychological and emotional interventions aimed at supporting individuals or couples dealing with fertility issues. Here is a brief summary of therapy support options commonly available:

Fertility counseling provides a safe space for individuals or couples to express their emotions, concerns, and frustrations related to fertility challenges. A therapist can help individuals explore their feelings, develop coping strategies, and provide emotional support throughout the fertility journey.

Therapists can teach individuals or couples coping strategies to manage stress, anxiety, and grief associated with fertility struggles. Techniques such as relaxation exercises, mindfulness, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) may be employed to develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Participating in support groups allows individuals or couples to connect with others who are going through similar experiences. Sharing stories, exchanging advice, and receiving support from others facing fertility challenges can be beneficial in reducing feelings of isolation and fostering a sense of community.

Fertility struggles can place significant strain on a relationship. Couples therapy can help improve communication, foster understanding, and strengthen the emotional bond between partners. It provides a platform for open dialogue, addressing conflicts, and developing strategies to navigate the fertility journey together.

Experiencing infertility or miscarriages can lead to profound feelings of grief and loss. Therapy can help individuals process their emotions, mourn their losses, and find ways to heal. Grief counseling offers a space for individuals to express their emotions and work towards acceptance and resilience.

It’s important to note that therapy support for fertility can vary depending on the specific needs and preferences of the individual or couple. Each person’s fertility journey is unique, and therapy can be tailored accordingly to provide the most effective support.

          Pregnancy, Birth & Postpartum

Therapy support for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) aims to provide mental health interventions and support for individuals experiencing mood and anxiety disorders during pregnancy or after childbirth.

Individual therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or interpersonal therapy (IPT), is often recommended for PMADs. It involves working one-on-one with a therapist to address specific symptoms, develop coping strategies, and explore underlying emotional issues contributing to the disorder.

In some cases, medication may be prescribed to help alleviate the symptoms of PMADs. Therapy support may include collaboration with a psychiatrist or healthcare provider to monitor medication effectiveness and manage any potential side effects.

Group therapy brings together individuals experiencing PMADs to share their experiences, provide support, and learn coping skills from one another. It offers a sense of community, reduces isolation, and helps individuals realize they are not alone in their struggles.

PMADs can have a significant impact on relationships and family dynamics. Couples or family therapy provides a space for open communication, understanding, and support. It can help strengthen relationships, enhance parenting skills, and promote a supportive environment for the individual experiencing PMADs.

Therapists may provide psychoeducation to individuals and their families about PMADs, including information about symptoms, causes, and available treatment options. This education helps individuals understand their condition and reduces stigma while promoting self-care and seeking appropriate support.

Supportive counseling focuses on providing emotional support, empathy, and validation to individuals experiencing PMADs. It helps individuals process their feelings, cope with the challenges they face, and develop a positive outlook towards recovery.

Therapists often work with individuals to develop self-care strategies and stress management techniques tailored to their needs. This may include promoting healthy sleep habits, encouraging physical exercise, exploring relaxation techniques, and establishing a self-care routine.

*In cases where PMADs present a risk of harm to the individual or their infant, therapists may assist in creating a safety plan. This plan outlines steps to ensure the safety of both the individual and the baby and includes strategies for accessing immediate help during crisis situations.

Therapy support for PMADs is typically individualized based on the specific symptoms, severity, and needs of the individual. Collaborative treatment involving therapists, psychiatrists, and healthcare providers can provide comprehensive care to promote recovery and well-being.

          Early Childhood Parenting

Therapy for parents of young children aims to provide support, guidance, and strategies to navigate the challenges and promote the well-being of both parents and children.

Therapists can provide education on child development, age-appropriate behaviors, and effective parenting strategies. They may offer guidance on positive discipline techniques, setting boundaries, and fostering healthy parent-child relationships.

Family therapy involves the whole family unit and can be beneficial when addressing family dynamics, communication issues, or conflicts affecting the well-being of parents and young children. Therapists work with the family as a system, promoting healthy interactions and addressing concerns that impact the entire family.

Parenting young children can be demanding and stressful. Therapists can help parents develop coping strategies and stress management techniques to navigate the challenges more effectively. This may include self-care practices, relaxation exercises, and establishing support systems.

Therapists can provide support and therapy for parents experiencing postpartum depression or anxiety. They help individuals identify and manage symptoms, explore underlying emotional issues, and develop coping strategies to enhance their well-being and promote healthy parent-child relationships.

Therapy can assist parents in improving their co-parenting skills and strengthening their relationship. Therapists can help parents develop effective communication strategies, resolve conflicts, and find a balance between parenting responsibilities and individual needs.

Therapy can address the challenges and adjustments associated with becoming a parent. Therapists can support parents in managing expectations, developing a sense of identity as a parent, and navigating the changes in roles and relationships that occur after having a child.

Participating in parent support groups can provide a sense of community, validation, and peer support. These groups offer a space for parents to share experiences, exchange advice, and learn from one another while fostering a sense of belonging.

Therapy for parents of young children is flexible and tailored to the specific needs of each family. By providing support, guidance, and evidence-based strategies, therapy can help parents navigate the joys and challenges of raising young children and promote a healthy and nurturing environment for the entire family.

          Child and Adolescent Mental Health

Therapy for child and adolescent mental health aims to address and improve the emotional, behavioral, and psychological well-being of young individuals. Here is a brief summary of therapy options commonly used for child and adolescent mental health:

Play Therapy: Play therapy is a therapeutic approach that allows children to express themselves and work through their emotions and challenges using play and creative activities. Therapists engage children in play to observe their behavior, facilitate communication, and help them process difficult experiences or emotions.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is a widely used therapeutic approach that helps children and adolescents identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors. It focuses on developing coping skills, problem-solving abilities, and promoting positive self-talk to address a range of mental health issues.

Family Therapy: Family therapy involves the entire family in the therapeutic process. It addresses family dynamics, communication patterns, and relationships that may contribute to the child or adolescent’s mental health concerns. Family therapy helps improve communication, resolve conflicts, and promote healthier interactions within the family system.

Trauma-Focused Therapy: Trauma-focused therapy is designed specifically for children and adolescents who have experienced trauma. Therapists use evidence-based techniques to help young individuals process and cope with traumatic experiences, reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress, and restore a sense of safety and well-being.

Social Skills Training: Social skills training focuses on helping children and adolescents develop appropriate social skills and improve their ability to interact and communicate with others. Therapists teach and practice skills such as active listening, assertiveness, conflict resolution, and empathy.

Therapy for child and adolescent mental health is tailored to the specific needs, developmental stage, and presenting concerns of each individual. Therapists work collaboratively with young individuals and their families to provide support, develop coping skills, promote healthy relationships, and enhance overall well-being.

          Trauma

Therapy for trauma focuses on helping individuals heal from the emotional and psychological effects of traumatic experiences. Healing Home Counseling Group utilizes many interventions to include the below approaches for trauma treatment.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT): TF-CBT is an evidence-based approach specifically designed to address trauma-related symptoms in children and adolescents. It combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with trauma processing and incorporates elements of psychoeducation, relaxation techniques, and skill-building to help individuals cope with and recover from trauma.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): EMDR is a therapeutic approach that aims to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. It involves the use of bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tactile stimulation, while guiding individuals to reprocess traumatic memories and develop more adaptive beliefs and emotions.

Narrative Therapy: Narrative therapy focuses on helping individuals construct and make meaning of their trauma experiences through storytelling. Therapists assist individuals in exploring and reframing their traumatic narrative, emphasizing personal strengths and resilience.

Therapy for trauma is tailored to the unique needs and preferences of each individual. It provides a safe and supportive space for individuals to process their trauma, reduce distressing symptoms, develop coping skills, and promote healing and resilience.

          Perinatal Grief & Loss

Therapy for perinatal grief and loss aims to provide emotional support, validation, and coping strategies for individuals or couples who have experienced the loss of a pregnancy or infant.

Grief counseling provides a safe space for individuals or couples to express their emotions, process their grief, and navigate the complex emotions associated with perinatal loss. Therapists can help individuals understand and validate their feelings, explore the meaning of the loss, and develop coping strategies to adjust to life after the loss.

Individual therapy offers a one-on-one therapeutic relationship where the individual can explore their unique grief experience. Therapists can help individuals navigate the grieving process, manage intense emotions, and address any underlying issues that may arise due to the loss.

Perinatal loss can impact relationships and family dynamics. Couples or family therapy provides a space for open communication, shared grieving, and support for one another. Therapists can help couples or families navigate the grief together, strengthen their bonds, and develop coping strategies as a unit.

Participating in support groups specifically for individuals or couples who have experienced perinatal loss can be highly beneficial. Connecting with others who have gone through similar experiences provides validation, empathy, and a sense of community. Support groups offer a space to share stories, exchange advice, and learn coping strategies from others who understand the unique challenges of perinatal grief and loss.

Narrative therapy involves exploring and reconstructing the individual’s or couple’s story of the loss. Therapists can help individuals or couples make sense of their experience, find meaning, and create a narrative that honors the memory of their lost baby. This process can support healing and facilitate integration of the loss into their life story.

Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and breathing exercises, can be incorporated into therapy to help individuals or couples manage the overwhelming emotions and distress associated with perinatal grief. Mindfulness can promote self-compassion, acceptance, and provide a sense of calm amidst the pain of loss.

Therapists can support individuals or couples in creating personalized rituals or memorials to honor the memory of their baby. These rituals can be healing and provide a tangible way to remember and cherish their lost child.

Therapy for perinatal grief and loss should be tailored to the unique needs and preferences of the individual or couple. Each person’s grief journey is unique, and therapy can provide a supportive and compassionate space to navigate the challenges and complexities of perinatal loss.
